Since I updated Calibre, I cannot dowload metadata anymore. I get the following error messages (here is Amazon, but i get the same error for Google):

Hello, I recently had a hard drive die, and on it was my calibre library. :smack: Now, I was mad I lost all my books, but the main problem I have is, I had calibre installed on that hard drive, and now calibre refuses to uninstall. Any help? And I also cant install it cuase it errors saying I have no disk space on that drive (the dead one, no duh) and I cant change the install location also because it says there is no E drive. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

How can you open a book in Calibre by a link?

I am trying to create links to Pandoc, similarly as you can open Spotify with a specific song by `spotify:[song-id]` but with Calibre like

`calibre:[doi/isbn].p=[page].c=[chapter]`

The ultimate goal is to have links which contains the specific locations in a book such that the link directs you also to the appropriate location.
You can assume that the filetype of all books is CHM. Please, comment if this is not the optimal selection for the opening of a book in a particular page. I am open to consider other formats supported by Calibre.

At this point, I am evaluating how this could be possible. My thread about automating note presentation about tables in this thread here where you see that I try to use LaTeX's Pandoc tables to include Files in filesystem and Books in Calibre.

The motivation for this project comes from the fact that I am often given 5-10 books to read at specific pages; and repeat that some weeks - sometimes all of the sudden.

How can you open a book by a link etc in PDF in Calibre?

How can you open a specific page/section in a book by a link in Calibre?

Is there a way to set Calibre Content Server to save with series info?

I noticed that when a file is saved from the content server that the name is just name - author(s). I tested with a file that has the series info properly entered and the series info shows up on the content server.

Just wondering if I missed a setting somewhere.

Sync subset of library to dropbox folder

My whole calibre library would put me over my free Dropbox limit and I usually only ever want a select group of books I've marked as prioritized to be synced into my Dropbox so I can save it locally to my phone. Syncing only this subset also makes picking books I want easier on the phone because I can't sort/filter in the Dropbox app like I can in Calibre so I don't want my non-prioritized books there at all.

I can manually switch the virtual library and manually copy those to a new library and manually redo this every time something changes but I'd prefer an automated way.

One way I could see a plugin doing this is to grab the books from Calibre based on user's criteria, then create a folder of symlinks to each of those books in the Dropbox folder (thus data never needs to get duplicated). Would this work?

Intermittent Calibre shutdown with Kobo

Just wondering if anyone else ever experiences calibre closing down while a Kobo is attached?

I've experienced this off and on for some time (at least a year I'd say).

I attach my Kobo, it starts syncing; backups the database, prompts me as to whether or not to update reading stats and .... kaboo... calibre shuts down.

I normally don't run in debug mode but do know on at least one occasion I was and there were no clues in the log. I am right now back in debug mode and will see what (if anything) I can catch.

PaperWhite possibility?

I was recently given a PaperWhite 2 for reading ebooks. I had been using a iPad for the longest time. I almost want to kick myself for not trying out using a Kindle. I will start by saying that e-ink is far superior to LCD, (with the exception of the "fading" ghosting image from changing pages that doesn't exist as a iPad problem). That out of the way, I have a question about properly organizing my books on my PaperWhite. All of my existing ebooks are in Epub format. From what I understand, Calibre can easily address this issue. However, with the current firmware on the PaperWhite I do notice a problem on organizing my books. On my iPad, I already have my ebooks properly tagged with correct series order, title(s), author(s), etc. However, I have a large library of books. I did read up a little on Kindle "collections" but that doesn't seem to quite address what I am wanting to do. I want Book #1, Book #2, Book #3, then have a combined series using EpubMerge, then Book #5, etc. Is it possible to take my collected epub series and use EpubMerge, maintaining TOC, and then convert to Mobi/AZW3? Will that work or will the Kindle freak out and have issues reading those combined books? If it could work, what is the best recommended settings for combining my Epubs with EpubMerge, then the best settings for converting the combined Epub file to Mobi or AZW3? Likewise, should I use default settings? or Should I try to mess with using Heuristic Processing as well? I appreciate any suggestions and ideas for what I am wanting to do.

How to get author data from folder name? (importing a lot of cbz)

$

Hi,
I have got a little problem and I hope you guys can help me out.

There is a huge collection of cbz-files which I want to catalogue in calibre. Unfortunately, the files themselves do not contain any metadata such as "author". Instead you can find the files in the their author's folder.

Example: Author A has written three books B1, B2 and B3. There is one folder called "Author A" which contains all three books.

There are a hella lot of them, so importing them as usual would result in countless hours of re-tagging the files with "author" which I want to avoid. So, here is my question: Is there any way to use the folders' names with the information of the author?
(or in other words: Can Calibre automatically tag the files with the author-data from their folders?)

Conversion from xhtml to epub loose svg images

Thanks for making calibre available. Apologies if I am making a rookie error, but I have a Latex-driven workflow that produces a xhtml book with numerous svg illustrations. The xhtml file view fine in a browser. I then run

ebook-convert DA1_book.xhtml DA1_book.epub

but find that the hrefs to svg files in the various xhtml sections are gone, yet all the svg files are included in the epub file. E.g, the original lines like

<div id="Ch1.F1" class="ltx_figure"><object data="Fig1_dataclasses.svg" id="Ch1.F1.g1" class="ltx_graphics ltx_centering" width="470" height="133" alt=""/>

are not present in the epub archive but all the SVG files are there. When importing the epub (or xhtml) into calibre and trying to view it I get the error "No book with id 13 present". Opening the epub in iBooks also shows no figures. Am I missing an option?

I’ve got this Regex for searching chapters
Code:

<p([^>]*>\(<[^/].+?>)*chapter.+?</)p>
It worked fine for days. Today the editor stopped liking it. It will run once and then freezes.
The other saved searches work ok. Removed and reinstalled Calibre.

When I try to load ver 3.5 on my Mac using the downloaded dmg file I never get the main window. I see it in the menu bar and I get an icon in the dock but that's all I get. Ver 3.4 loads fine.

Docx Conversion

Kovid, my issue relates to converting books to Docx Format.

The conversion operates perfectly but when loaded into MS Word, it appears that the document is hard coded to the US English Dictionary.

Is it possible to have Calibre use the OS, (In my case, Windows 7), language, not the Keyboard Language.

My system: English (Australia)

Thank you

DOCX conversion failure

Please bear with me. I'm a newbie with Calibre, and hope I can get an answer for this.

First the background: 27 inch iMac with 2.93 GHz Core i7 quad core processor, 20 GB RAM, MacOS 10.6.8, Calibre 1.48. The file is a docx format Word file, almost 6 MB, heavily formatted with index markers. On paper it comes out to over 3,000 pages (!). I'm not using Calibre 2.28 because I'm still using "Snow Leopard" (MacOSX 10.6.8).

I have been trying to convert to Kindle (later will also try Nook). I've done so in the past with smaller test files, and even get the index (index entries are the book title).

With this file, after about 24 hours of crunching away, it fails with error:

Python function terminated unexpectedly: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: u'/var/folders/5X/5XNvN49TETSbIv61HMwzWk+++TI/-Tmp-/calibre_1.48.0_tmp_11ffR0/Tmo1PYdocx_container/word/settings.xml'
InputFormatPlugin: DOCX Input running on /var/folders/5X/5XNvN49TETSbIv61HMwzWk+++TI/-Tmp-/calibre_1.48.0_tmp_11ffR0/99zdil.docx
Encountered unknown field: tc, ignoring it.

I can post the entire error report if required.

Does anyone have an idea what's wrong and what I can do to fix it? Am I simply asking too much of Calibre?

I also have a PC with a 3.4 GHz quad-core Core i7 processor, Windows 7, with 8GB of RAM, Calibre 2.28, but it fails within 10-20 minutes with the same DOCX file. I have ordered more RAM to take it to 16 GB, hoping this might help with the conversion.

I'll be publishing the book in paper form (with multi-column layout, it'll be around 2,400 pages), but want to offer an ebook option in Nook and Kindle formats for a substantial price reduction over the print version.

I'd be grateful for any and all suggestions. Thanks to the community in advance.

Switching annotated collection from one Kindle to another

Switching annotated collection from one Kindle to another.

I am considering moving to a new Kindle unit but would like to retain my highlights & annotations currently sitting on my present Kindle. How can I best do this since I have been using Calibre to process all my ebooks and this seems to rule out going through the Amazon website ?

Business startup owner looking to speak with devs

Forgive me if this is not the appropriate place for this thread, but I wanted to reach out to the developers of Calibre and this seemed like a good place to start.

I am working on a somewhat ambitious project that has a large emphasis on ebook/ereader functionality and I am dying to get in touch with some developers. I believe this to be a big opportunity for the Calibre software and the ereader/ebook scene, in general.

The details are confidential, so I won't be able to discuss anything on this thread, but I hope that some of you will see this and reach out to me. If anyone else knows a better way in which I can reach out to the developers then I would greatly appreciate any information you have.

Setting up server for WWW access.

I have a dynamic IP address, but want to run the Calibre server. How do I do this, as don’t I have to put my IP in the settings ie the URL? Also, not sure about this either, as when I asked my ISP what my Hostname was, they told me they hadn’t heard of this, and if I wanted to run a server, I would need to pay for a new Domain, business rates etc etc….
Im a little confused to say the least.

Ive had the server running successfully on my home network, but buggered if i can see how to access it from the web!

WARNING-on PC Calibre takes over MANY file associations

$

I installed Calibre on a Windows 8.1 PC yesterday.
Today, I double clicked a TXT file, and Calibre OPENED!!

On checking, I see that it has taken over file association for essentially EVERY text-type document of any sort on the computer.
txt
html
doc
docx
odt
js
on and on.
It took over everything, and has taken me about an hour of re-associating things back to the correct program.

I cannot tell you how disappointed I am in this obnoxious behavior.
I truly want to use very bad words.
