Using keyboard to navigate between authors

Hi my friends:
I don't know if it's possible, I hope it will, so I make my question to you.
Calibre has keyboard shortcuts for navigate between authors in the main list? I mean, when I expand the Authors group, I find a list grouped by initial letter, of course, from A to Z, and between parentheses, the number of author for each letter.

When I select a letter, by example, A, i see the complete list of authors with that letter, and in parentheses, how many books have.

So, I want to navigate between authors, not books, using the keyboard, it that possible?

I have about half a million book, and want to classify it according to Dewey. Can I do that automatically in Calibre lib?
Can Calibre get the dewey number from the following site:
http://classify.oclc.org/classify2/


This will be great if I can find any help.

Double Click Options

I thought I'd seen a setting to control what happens when I double click a book in the book listing page.

Now when I DC, it opens the Viewer. I'd like to have it open Edit Metadata instead.

Am I just not remembering correctly, or can some one point me to the setting for that?

Tag Browser

Please don't hate me.... I see the term "Tag Browser" all the time but I don't seem to have one. I have a "Tag Mapper" for entering rules, but not the old Tab Browser. I do have 2.40 64bit. I feel like an old fart asking for a hind to cross the street but can anybody help me cross this street?

Quick Tip for Titles

I'm one who has always entered series data manually and usually changed the titles to: "series #: shortened title". Worked fine until I had metadata issues and had to go back to Amazon to find missing ids. IF the title and author are exact, download metadata usually found the missing identifiers. My modified titles broke and possibility of this happening,

My fix was to create a custom column with lookup name mytitle and column MyTitle.
Next a new Search & Replace with a Regular Expression Search Mode and:
Search Field = title
Search For: (.*)
Replace With: \1
Destination Field: #mytitle
Save as what you want

Highlight the titles you want to modify and run the S&R. The MyTitle column for selected books will populate with the titles data. Then make your changes in the MyTitle column. If you ever need to refer back to the Amazon site (without a current identifier), you have a chance with using download metadata.

I will use this for all my new books when adding them so I'm set.

Format heading possible

Is it possible to add a format heading to the calibre columns?
I have let a few books ( maybe hundreds) escape and now I have over 25k in there, it is hard to re-find them them to do a reformat . I was wondering if it is possible to add a column like tags or collection, so I can find those not in Epub more easily but it would need to find them automatically for me not have me input it...does that make sense to you?

Going back a page after exiting fullscreen

I'm currently using Calibre v. 2.40 - though I noticed that this problem has been there since before a few version updates before. After reading with a full screen mode, I would exit (Esc), and when I come back to the screen and press F11 to go into fullscreen mode again, it would go back to the previous page. A page that I'd already read. It's not a serious problem, but an annoying one.

How do I fix this? Thanks in advance to anybody who can help.

Problems with Kindle Fire HD

Hi,

my Fire shows in Windows and in Calibre. But when trying to send a book the workorder hangs, the book is not send.

When copying the book manually from the Calibre book folder to the Fire Documents folder it shows up on the fire and - after a while - in Calibre.

What can I do to make it work like with my Kindle Paperwhite?

Diacritical characters get 'translated'

Hi,

New to this forum.
I'm just a simple point-and-click type user and using Calibre is great to keep my collection organised.
However, there is one thing that annoys me greatly.
Whenever I have a diacritical character in an author name or a book title, calibre 'translates' this into the normal character form on disk in the folder name created for the author, as well as in the file-name created for the epub file. eg. ö becomes plain o; é becomes e; etc.
Funny thing is, in the library calibre accepts and maintains those :thumbsup:, but once out on disk the 'translation' has taken place.:blink:

Have I got something configured incorrectly?, although I can't imagine what, since I'm basically using a next-next-finish type installation (can you tell I'm using a Windows box?:D), i.e. apart from choosing my language and reader I haven't made any configuration changes.

Or, is it not possible at all to have calibre maintain these characters?

Appreciate your insight(s) here.

Is the Series tag browser broken

Is this broken?

Clicking on the Series first Letter in the Tag Browser should return the 36 items. It does not

series_sort:"~^[K]" (editing the search to series:"~^[K]" works)

First letter works for Authors, Tags and Publishers

Can someone help me with this Azw4 nightmare conversion that never ends?

This has been the nightmare of all nightmares here. I am also a long time lurker, but never posted, btw.

I originally rented this ebook textbook, then bought the book- book was then a non-drm.

By using the unpack plugins I was somehow able to convert it to a PDF- and I honestly do not know how. However, from the PDF I could not split the book by printing to file, nor could I convert the book to anything remotely near a suitable text to speech format. I was using both a Win 7 and Win 8 configs.
I knew I was going to Mac, so I was trying to be patient while my new computer arrived. The windows were both similar in specs to net books and had very little memory and were both quite old and had really been through it over the years.
I keep the Win 7 around just for TTS on the Kindle app. I read a ton ton ton for school, my eyes get tired, I loose my place, etc etc. It is a huge deal to me to have the books either read to me or be able to change my font to different colors like the beeline reader font.

Anyway...it was a headache and a half getting *my* copy of a nDRM version. I actually bought this book twice trying to get rid of any "rental" issues that may have been lingering. So now I have a rental older e-edition of this book, and I have bought two copies of this current edition text book and I cannot get it to PDF or EPUB.

The current issues are pasted below with what I see when I attempt to unpack with the plugin. When I attempt to convert the long way, it gets stuck at 67%. When I did get it to convert on the Win machine- (after the lone semi successful attempt) it would only pull text associated with images.

I actually need the opposite. I wouldn't mind not having the images in the book if I could have the text either editable/splittable or TTS capable (mobile preferred.)

Does anyone have any insight into this at all?

Kindle Fire - book not showing on device within Calibre.

Hi, I've never had a problem using Calibre until now, but when I tried to backup my recent purchases one of the books is not showing up in the main memory of the device so I am unable to back it up. I have tried removing the book from my kindle and downloading it again but that has made no difference.

Any suggestions?

Help with MemoryError

Hi!
I keep getting Memory Error message while trying to convert large(>200mb) mobi files to any other format. It occurs almost immediately after start. And the error message is:

HELP..Problems with permanent Column Views

I'm posting inquiries here to see if anyone knows of this before submitting a bug.

I cannot move my custom columns into a view position and have it be permanent. Every restart goes back to the view I've used for a long time. I do not use View Manager. The plug-in was installed, but I removed it to check if its presence affected this, but there was no change. I update regularly so cannot pinpoint a coinciding update and start of the problem. I've only just recently started making more adjustments to column positions. I am tired of re-positioning, re-sizing, and hiding these columns now. I use Caliber a lot, so it is significant.

EXAMPLE: Columns Viewed are A,B,C,D,E,F,G
* Move G and hide F such that A,B,C,D,G,E
* Close then restart PC or just restart Calibre; it always opens to the original.

I've tried this 2 ways, both of which worked in the past when I positioned my screen view:
1- The intuitive column drag to position and right click to hide,
2- The "Add custom columns" option where I use the up/down green arrows to move the column position,


Tech Info including testing environment:
Wdw 7
  • Calibre 2.40
  • No View Manager use or plug-in presence.
  • I do have my customized Calibre settings in a custom location that backs up to the cloud; however, the cloud syncing program is always inactive during Calibre use to avoid corrupting files.
  • Only basic background programs and virus software is running at the same time as these Calibre test.
  • There is plenty of memory.

Picture doesn't show on preview

I was trying to vertically center a picture and realize the epub I'm attaching.
Can't see any picture on the editor preview, but it appears properly on ADE.
Am I missing something? Thanks :)

Calibre Has a Mind of It's Own

I usually use modified date sort order when loading books. Lately Calibre on one machine seems to be off in never never land (like Windooz) doing something and I see books that I haven't touched in months showing up at the top of the modified sort order. I have not idea what in the world is going on.

Is there a way to look at a log or something to figure out what its doing.

Any idea what setting might have changed so that Calibre is doing stuff in the background that I didn't ask for?

Calibre not seeing iPad Mini 2

I've searched and read multiple forums, and I'm still lost.

Details:

Mac OS: 10.9.5
Calibre: 2.4.0

Plugins activated:
1) iOS reader with Marvin selected
2) Marvin XD

Additional:
* Auto Sync in iTunes turned off
* No additional devices plugged into mac

What I'm doing:
1) Reset Calibre multiple times
2) Plug in the iPad mini
3) Open Marvin
4) Go to "Get Books" and hit Calibre.
5) Look at Calibre on Mac and nothing.

Note: I am getting occasionally the following error window:

OSError: [Errno 24] Too many open files: '/Users/JRG/Library/Preferences/calibre/gui.json

Custom Column Sort

I store all my audiobooks in Calibre. I added a column for Narrator although I have to add the name manually because I don’t think any plugins pull that information from the file or the net.
My problem arose when I tried to add a column for the Length of the audiobook.
My preferred format is 12h23m and it works just fine in a text column except that it will not sort in order showing shortest to longest or vise versa. I had hoped that it would short in a numeric order starting with the hours, but it doesn’t. I have tried using the column as an integer instead of text and using the format of 12.23 which works for sorting.
Any ideas on how to short correctly in my preferred format?
