Need Help - Indicating "2nd Edition" of Book in Title?

$

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the forum, and relatively new to using Calibre- though I love all of the features & functions that the program includes!

My question is about book titling in Calibre- and I realize that there are probably multiple ways to handle this issue, and no "right" or "wrong" way.

But I would like others feedback on how they handle titling books in Calibre that are beyond the 1st edition.

Which title format is it more common to use? Some examples are listed below, but please feel free to introduce me to new techniques, as well.:

Building a House, Second Edition - Charles Smith (Feb, 2014)
Building a House, 2nd Edition - Charles Smith (Feb, 2014)
Building a House (Second Edition) - Charles Smith (Feb, 2014)
Building a House (2nd Edition) - Charles Smith (Feb, 2014)

Thanks so much for your help. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Validating Epub

The Sigil menu has an option to validate the file using FlightCrew. No such option is available in Calibre Editor. If (in Calibre Editor) I "Run the Bug" (i.e. Tools-Check Book) is that the same or comparable to validating with such as FlightCrew, or how do they compare?

Thanks

Windows 7 at home, and XP at work...

Okay, I am trying to find out if this will work. I have Windows 7 at home. I have the older version of Calibre on a portable HD that I take to work with me.

My older version has a lot of messed up stuff in it including messed up author names, etc. If I move everything painstakingly to the newer version to correct and fix the old info, can I copy it back to the older installation, and it still run with the older version of XP? Or should I install the older version in another directory of my HD and start over again?

Indentation for numbered/bulletted paragraphs

I'm converting from docx, and both my numbered paragraphs and bulleted paragraphs are getting indented by quite a bit. Ideally, the numbers and bullets would be flush left, in line with all the other paragraphs (which is how the styles have them in the docx).

I'd love to be able to do something in the Word doc to fix this.

I have been able to edit the ePub doc stylesheet, but it feels rather crude -- I have to go find a numbered/bulleted item, see the style (block_n) then go edit that. Would prefer a fix that takes care of itself.

Thanks for any help, and thanks again for such a wonderful tool!

Author LN-FN swapped on download of metadata

Before I import books into calibre I ensure that the file name follows the pattern

Lastname, Firstname - series - title.ext

where the series portion is optional. I have set calibre to recognize this so books get imported and sorted correctly. For one thing, this removes all ambiguity for last names with more than one word. Authors are sorted as LN, FN. However, if I download metadata, the author name in the Authors treeview in the left panel, as well as the Author name in the details view (centre panel) is rearranged as FN LN, although the Author Sort remains as LN, FN. Unfortunately, the physical (on disk) book is relocated to a new folder based on FN LN.

Is there a way to tell calibre to not change LN, FN to FN LN?

Help!!!! CantOpenError: unable to open database file

All;
I am running E-Calibre on Windows 7 and love it. I finally imported and organized over 3,000 pdf books and papers and I can't do without it. All of a sudden I'm getting the following error whenever I try to open a book.

CantOpenError: unable to open database file

Has anyone seen this error before? I'm concerned that I'm going to lose my entire library. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks;
Frank

Calibre opens blank

Hi. I recently installed Calibre and at first it worked fine. It opened epubs with three columns, contents on the left, html (I think) in the middle, and clear text on the right. I didn't care about editing, since I had no problem editing my files stored in documents. I wanted only to view the documents that I had uploaded in Lulu and Smashwords.
I fiddled with it trying to get view only, and ended up with a mess. Now when I open a file from lulu or smashwords, calibre shows a blank page, no columns.Nothing I do seems to help.
Does anyone have an idea of what I may have done to mess it up, and how I might go about fixing it? I would truly appreciate any help. Thanks.

Spell Check not working at all

Hi,
I have some trouble with spell checking. It does not seem to work for me in any book I tried, even after deleting all config files and with a fresh install. (At some point it did work, but I can't pinpoint when it started to fail. I don't use the option that much.)
I used the build-in dictionaries, but tried to install one from openoffice too, with the same result (failure).

I always get this error message:
Code:

ERROR: Failed to check spelling: Failed to check spelling, click "Show details" for the full error information.

If I ignore the error message I can see on the right side of the spell-checking window: "You have no active user dictionaries. You must choose at least one active user dictionary via Preferences->Editor->Manage spelling dictionaries"
If I go there, the US dictionary is the default for the english language. Under "Manage user dictionaries" exist the "Default" dictionary which is marked as active. I tried adding a new dictionary and marked it active, but that neither worked.
Misspelled words are (correctly) marked in the editor though.

What am I missing??

System is Archlinux/Gnome 3.16.2 and latest kernel.

Ah and the Reports tool failes, too. But I guess thats related to the dictionary problem (at least the error traceback has a dictionary call in it).

New and updated recipes for Ukrainian media

Hi,

Here are new Calibre recipes for 2 Ukrainian language newspapers and 1 updated recipe:

New:
  • Express (Експрес) - a popular daily newspaper
  • Champion.com.ua - sports news

Updated:
  • Zaxid.Net (Захід.Нет), news site for Western Ukraine (Galicia and Volhynia)
The old Calibre recipe didn't fetch all articles.

The recipes work fine on my Kindle Paperwhite. I'll maintain these recipes in the future, and your comments / suggestions are most welcome! :)

convert downloaded website to .mobi?

How can I take a website and make a .mobi file for each of its monthly posts?

I downloaded the site with sitesucker and the file size is 4gigs so that's obviously too big for one .mobi. The downloaded directory structure is set up by year 2007-2015. Within each year there are folders with the months 1-12 (Jan-Dec). Inside each month are about 30 folders and inside each there are folders representing the websites' posts like "don-quixote-roc-riera-rojas." Inside these posts there is an index file which I've tried to add to Calibre, but it stays at 0% progress on the "reading metadata and adding to the library" operation. These files open up fine in Chrome offline, so I know the content is there. Please discuss

Error: no books found - mac os and calibre 2.3

Hello-

I have installed 2.30 on yosemite. I created a plist in LaunchDaemons which starts the server listening. However, it says I have no books. I'm stuck. It used to work and then about 10 versions ago it stopped.

I am also unable to share directly from preferences when running the calibre app because it can't create a socket. I'd gladly just run it from the app to get some books to my iphone. This may simply be a yosemite issue.

The library is on an external volume.

Any thoughts or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Below is my plist file and the error i get when searching for books.

Cheers,

Erik

change/resize cover in azw

aka old dog needing help learning new trick....

this is something I can do very easily in epub, via plug -ins, but I am probably using some ridiculously convoluted route for azw... so can someone please tell me how I should be doing this:

I have an azw, opened in calibre editor

Q1. I want to know the size of the cover image which is currently within the azw. I can't seem to see it, so I am exporting to desktop and asking windows for the answer- surely I am missing something simpler ? ( the editor is quoting a size, but this seems to be a thumbnail size of 160 x 240 when the true size , as checked by windows , is 600 x 900 )

Q2. I want to make that cover larger, or smaller., or replace it with something different. If I was dealing with an epub I would just change it in main library , via the metadata tools, and use modify-epub plug-in to put the new cover in tot he book. that is probably an obsolete route but it works and i can remember how to to it.
how should I do if , using only calibre editor, for azw, [ and i suppose I should learn the matching slick method for epub while I am at it ?]

For azw there has to be a better way than fixing it in epub then reconverting , surely?

Alphabetizing in Calibre to have alphabetical in Kindle?

$

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum, so I apologize if this is a duplicate thread.

I'm wanting to figure out a way to allow the books I have to be alphabetical both in author and title. For example, right now it looks like this

Book D Jane Boe
Book C Jane Boe
Book B Jane Doe
Book A Jane Doe

And I'd like it to be

Book C Jane Boe
Book D Jane Boe
Book A Jane Doe
Book B Jane Doe

I know in Calibre, and in my kindle, you can sort by author or by title, though I have a few authors with multiple books, and for those authors, the titles are in what appears to be a random order. It's certainly not a major issue, and if there's no way to correct that that's fine. I think it's just my wanting to be organized-ness that is making me want everything lined up nicely.

Thanks so much!

Adding a new ebook format

Is there a way to make calibre to recognise a new extension as an ebook (eg recognize .nef as New Ebook Format)?

I know I can add files of any format by explicitly selecting them in the "Add books" dialog but if you have a lot of them in a directory tree calibre will not find them as it does not know that .nef is now an ebook. I am hoping there is a formats.xml or similar file somewhere which controls this behaviour but if there is I can't find it.

Thanks,

Custom search engine in Viewer?

$

Greetings all,
Is the search engine used in the Viewer user customizable? I'd like to replace Google with something else for Ctrl+E / context-menu searches. I tried using the customizable dictionary search as a substitute, but it seems to only search for the first word in a selected phrase.
I've looked through the FAQ and manual and also searched this thread but didn't find anything, but I apologize if I missed something.

Too many hyphens

Trying to clean book from Project Guttenberg that must have stated life as a scan.

There are many mis-placed or not needed hyphens everywhere

example 1: bat-tered
example 2: $500,- 000
example 3: the cat and -the dog
example 4: the cat- and the dog

I've been using spellcheck, one mis-spelt word at a time

Is there any RegEx's that have been used to at least take some of the tedium out of it?

That way I could just [Find] and [Replace and Find] through the document

Would really like a RE that would address common cases so I could do a [Replace All]

Thanks

Help - Learning to use Regex Functions

$

Struggling to understand use of Regex Functions capability -- primarily how to introduce function arguments. Maybe if someone can illustrate with an example, I can take it from there.

For instance:
If I have a set of lines in an epub document such as:
<p>chapter 1</p>
<p>chapter 1</p>
<p>chapter 1</p>
<p>chapter 1</p>

and what I want is:
<p>chapter 1</p>
<p>chapter 2</p>
<p>chapter 3</p>
<p>chapter 4</p>

Using the Increment() Function, what would the Find and Function lines look like?

Thanx for your help.

How do I get the server working?

Hi,

I don't know if this question has been answered before, I haven't been able to find an answer?

Is it possible to have different menus/toolbars depending on the calibre library?

Thank you in advance.
